This exhibition by Vancouver artist and illustrator Rae Maté features original illustrations on canvas and paper from her three children's books as well as playful "portraits" of cats and crocodiles. Growing up in Vancouver in the 1950's Rae loved the picture books she read with her parents, or borrowed from VPL's pink "Bookmobile" which used to visit her neighbourhood. The art of the picture book nourished Rae's own interest in art. She remembers copying from the pages of Bambi and The Wind in the Willows. Many years later, Rae became a cartoonist for The Ubyssey newspaper, a primary school teacher, a mother of three book-loving children, an art student, painter and a pre-school art instructor at Arts Umbrella. More recently Rae has illustrated three books for children: Crocodiles Say… and Crocodiles Play! written by Robert Heidbreder (Tradewind Books); and Pussycat, Pussycat, Where Have You Been?, written by Dan Bar-el (Simply Read Books). The show will include signed archival inkjet prints on rag paper from Pussycat, Pussycat, a book that Quill and Quire called "a tour de force that is sure to become a classic," and which The New York Times cited for its "imaginative Chagall-style paintings."
